Clownfish, or anemonefish, live inside animals that would kill almost anything else. Full profile in our clownfish guide.
1. They all start male
Clownfish are sequential hermaphrodites. Every fish begins male, and the dominant individual in a group becomes female. The change is one-way.
2. The film got the biology backwards
If the breeding female dies, the male partner would change sex and become the new female — not raise the young as a single father.
3. They are immune to their anemone
A mucus coat prevents the anemone's stinging cells firing, built up gradually as the fish acclimates.
4. The relationship is mutual
The anemone gets protection from predators, water circulation and nutrients from fish waste; the fish gets a stinging fortress.
5. Strict hierarchy
A breeding female, a breeding male, and non-breeding subordinates ranked by size, each waiting to move up.
6. Subordinates stay small deliberately
They restrain growth to remain visibly smaller than the rank above, avoiding eviction — social self-regulation.
7. Around 30 species
Only about ten anemone species host them.
8. They rarely leave home
Adults stay within metres of their anemone for life, which makes local anemone loss decisive.
9. Larvae find anemones by sound and smell
After drifting as plankton, larvae navigate back to reefs using reef noise and chemical cues.
10. Reef noise loss disorients them
Degraded reefs are quieter, and quiet reefs attract fewer settling larvae — a feedback loop.
11. Film fame increased collection
Demand for wild clownfish rose sharply after the film, though captive breeding now supplies much of the aquarium trade.
12. Bleaching threatens them indirectly
Anemones bleach like corals. A bleached anemone supports fewer fish and lower breeding success.
