History & Origins

Embden geese were developed in the Emden region of northwest Germany and exported across Europe and North America in the nineteenth century. Their white feathers simplified plucking for market, and their loud alarm calls made them useful as watch birds. They remain a standard heavy breed in small-farm and show circles.

Embden Fun Facts

  • Embden geese were historically used to weed cotton and tobacco fields.
  • Their honk carries long distances and alerts keepers to intruders.
  • They pair bond strongly and may defend mates aggressively in breeding season.
  • Embden goslings grow faster than many medium-weight breeds.

Embden Common Health Issues

Conditions seen more often in this breed, and how owners and vets help manage them. This is general guidance, not veterinary advice — always speak to your vet.

Bumblefoot

Hard or muddy ground causes foot pad infections with swelling and lameness in heavy geese.

Care: Provide dry roosting areas, soft pasture and prompt vet treatment for infected feet.

Predator injuries if free-ranged unsafely

Foxes, dogs and raptors threaten geese, especially goslings and nesting females on the ground.

Care: Secure night housing, electric fencing where needed and supervise ranging during brood rearing.

Obesity on rich feed

Too much grain without grazing causes weight gain that strains legs and reduces fertility.

Care: Prioritise pasture, limit treats and adjust feed seasonally.

Geese need space and respect

Geese are intelligent, long-lived birds that bond strongly with flockmates. Whether kept for eggs, grazing or companionship, they need secure water access and thoughtful handling — not impulse purchases.

Embden FAQs

Are Embden geese good guard animals?

They alert loudly to strangers and may chase intruders, but they are not a substitute for secure fencing and proper predator protection.

Are Embden geese aggressive?

Ganders can be territorial in spring. Respect their space, avoid surprising breeding pairs and socialise goslings calmly.

How much pasture does an Embden goose need?

Allow at least 20–30 square metres per goose on good grass, supplemented with balanced poultry feed when grass is short.

Can Embden geese fly?

Heavy Embdens seldom fly far but may flutter over low fences when startled. Wing clipping is sometimes used on lighter individuals.

What do Embden geese eat?

Primarily grass and forage with supplementary waterfowl or unmedicated poultry feed, especially in winter or dry periods.
