Few animals carry a more distorted reputation than the piranha. Immortalised in horror films and sensational travel writing — most notoriously by Theodore Roosevelt after his 1914 Amazon expedition — piranhas are widely imagined as frenzied, unstoppable predators capable of reducing a cow to a skeleton in seconds. The reality is far more nuanced and, frankly, more fascinating. Of the roughly 30 to 60 recognised piranha species across South America's great river basins, the red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) is the most studied and the most feared, yet research consistently shows it schools primarily for self-defence, subsists heavily on seeds and fin-fragments, and plays an irreplaceable ecological role as scavenger and nutrient recycler in the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraguay–Paraná, and São Francisco river systems.

The genus Pygocentrus contains the three species most associated with the "dangerous piranha" label: P. nattereri (red-bellied piranha), P. piraya (San Francisco piranha), and P. cariba (black-spot piranha). Where do piranhas live and what habitats do they prefer?

Seasonal flooding is ecologically critical: when the Amazon expands to cover millions of hectares of rainforest between December and May, piranhas move into inundated woodland to feed on fallen fruits and invertebrates, performing an underappreciated role as seed dispersers. What do piranhas eat, and are they really dangerous to humans?
