Two pandas, two families

The red panda was named first
Western science described the red panda decades before the giant panda. When the black-and-white bear was described and also found to eat bamboo, it was named after the animal already called a panda — so the giant panda is, in naming terms, the imposter.
Different families entirely
Giant pandas are true bears in the family Ursidae. Red pandas are the sole surviving members of Ailuridae, a family with no other living species. Their nearest relatives are the raccoon, weasel and skunk lineages, not bears.
Size is not close
A giant panda is a bear of 70–125 kg. A red panda weighs 3–6 kg — about the size of a large domestic cat, with a long ringed tail it wraps around itself for warmth.
Both have a false thumb — separately
Both species evolved an enlarged wrist bone that works as an opposable pad for gripping bamboo. Because the two lineages are distant, this is convergent evolution: the same solution reached twice, independently, for the same feeding problem.
Different bamboo, different lives
Giant pandas eat stems, shoots and leaves and spend most of the day on the ground feeding. Red pandas are largely arboreal, more selective, favour young leaves and shoots, and supplement with fruit, eggs and small animals.
Conservation status differs too
The giant panda is Vulnerable and improving. The red panda is Endangered and declining, hit by habitat loss across the eastern Himalaya, hunting and the pet trade — and it receives a small fraction of the attention and funding.
The uncomfortable comparison
The species with worse status, a smaller range and no close relatives is the one most people cannot name the family of. It is a clean illustration of how conservation funding follows charisma rather than need.
