Why do working donkeys need help?

Working donkeys can be central to transport, farming and household income. Helping them requires understanding both their welfare needs and the circumstances of the people who care for them.

This appeal’s intended focus is practical working-donkey welfare in Pakistan. WARN’s role is to assess and support eligible organisations through grants, helping turn donor support into appropriately planned care and prevention.

Look beyond whether a donkey can still work

An animal may remain active while its comfort and welfare are poor. Brooke’s welfare approach considers physical and mental wellbeing, rest, nutrition, environment and opportunities for appropriate behaviour.

A proposal should show how the animal will be assessed, who is qualified to provide care and how follow-up will be arranged. Simply distributing supplies or counting animals seen does not demonstrate an improvement in welfare.

Why local needs matter more than a global total

Global estimates describe the scale of working-equid welfare, but they cannot tell us which donkeys would benefit from a specific grant. Before funding, ask for the intended community, the identified welfare problems and the services already available.

A useful local baseline might record the condition of animals assessed and barriers to accessing care. The same assessment method should be used later, with permission and without exposing owners’ personal information.

What could this donkey appeal support?

Intended eligible support includes veterinary assessment and care, skilled hoof care, appropriate harness improvements and practical work with owners. The proposal should describe safe delivery and why the activity addresses the identified need.

Medicines should be selected and used through appropriate clinical oversight. Routine treatment packages or automatic antibiotic use should not be implied by a suggested gift. Prices on the donation form are contributions, not a guarantee that a particular procedure will be performed.

How does this relate to the donkey skin trade?

The Donkey Sanctuary’s 2024 briefing describes how demand for skins used in ejiao affects donkeys and communities that depend on them. That is an important wider issue, with its own evidence and campaign work.
