How do I adopt an orangutan from the US?
Adopt an orangutan from the US by matching the goal first. You cannot legally take an orangutan into a US home. For partner-led rescue abroad, symbolically adopt through WARN from $5/month at adopt an orangutan — a UK CIC program grant, not ownership of a named ape.
Use the form on this page, or open adopt an orangutan and choose monthly or one-off in USD. Stripe emails a USD receipt. If a workplace, school, church or group of friends is collecting, gather the money and give it here towards eligible support after recipient assessment and grant agreement rather than a box of supplies sitting in customs.
Please give money rather than food, toys or medicines from the United States unless a named partner has asked for a specific item in writing. Parcels usually arrive late and cost more than buying locally. A forest-school kitchen in Kalimantan does not wait for a US warehouse.
In-memory gifts are at in-memory giving. One-off orangutan giving without adoption language is at orangutan appeal. Email info@worldanimalrescuenetwork.org if you need a gift marked for a particular appeal.
What is symbolic orangutan adoption?
Supports the orangutan welfare and conservation appeal: orphan care, rehabilitation and protected forest. The related appeal is Help Orangutans: Explore how to help orangutans, compare donation purposes and symbolic adoption, and find practical ways to share and protect forests. Read orangutan appeal for the current purpose, recipient-selection status and donation terms.
Can I take an orangutan home through WARN?
No. WARN does not rehome orangutans to US households, and keeping a great ape as a pet is illegal. Local zoos and visitor centers that offer named "adoptions" are a different product: they fund an enclosure in the United States. WARN is developing grant support; no recipient or rehabilitation program is confirmed by this guide.
If you want to visit an orangutan in a US collection, contact that collection. If you want infants rescued from the pet trade to learn climbing and foraging in Kalimantan, stay on this page and symbolically adopt at adopt an orangutan.
Importing an individual ape is not conservation. A confiscated infant needs years of forest school before any release assessment. A ticket to hold that infant sets the next confiscation in motion.
WARN also does not offer named individual ape sponsorship with photo updates from a pen. All gifts are intended to support potential program support. See orangutan appeal for one-off donation wording.
What will my symbolic orangutan adoption actually fund?
WARN gifts are intended to support partner-led rescue, 24-hour infant care, forest school and post-release monitoring for orangutans in Indonesia and Malaysia. Donation amounts are contributions, not verified prices for individual procedures or care days. Amounts are voluntary contributions; no verified unit cost or fixed care outcome is promised. Figures are USD illustrations, not a named-ape invoice or a forex conversion of GBP unit costs.
WARN does not yet publish a partner-invoiced price for one day of infant care or one forest-school session as a result. Until that invoice exists, this page will not claim that a given amount buys one named unit. Possible support includes milk, veterinary supplies, keeper time, rescue transport and monitoring, subject to an assessed proposal and agreement.
WARN's target, published at where your money goes and current as of 22 August 2026, is for at least 80% of unrestricted donations to fund program delivery. That split is a target, not an audited outturn.
Forest school runs for years, not a weekend. Monthly adoption at adopt an orangutan or monthly giving is how those calendars get funded. Read orangutan forest school for the rehabilitation chain.
Why are orangutans Critically Endangered?
All three orangutan species — Bornean (Pongo pygmaeus), Sumatran (Pongo abelii) and Tapanuli (Pongo tapanuliensis) — are Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, each with a decreasing trend. The IUCN 2016 assessment puts Bornean numbers at around 104,700. Sumatran numbers are around 14,470 (2017). Tapanuli, described in 2017, numbers fewer than 800.
Palm oil, logging and mining erase the lowland forest these apes need. When a forest fragment is too small, an adult is stranded and an infant is taken for the pet trade after the mother is killed. Females give birth roughly every seven to nine years, so every rescued female matters.
WARN aims to raise support for partners who already run confiscation, quarantine, forest school and protected-forest release — not a WARN-branded sanctuary. East Kalimantan context is at east kalimantan orangutan rehabilitation and newsroom briefing.
Read newsroom briefing and orangutan. Your adoption does not stop palm oil on its own. It funds the pipeline that meets the next confiscated infant.
How long does orangutan rehabilitation take?
Orphaned orangutans typically need five to eight years of forest-school training before any release assessment. Wild infants stay with their mothers for years. An orphan is a multi-year dependent, not a weekend invoice. That is why monthly symbolic adoption is more useful than a one-off headline gift.
Forest school teaches climbing, nest-building, foraging and the social skills a mother would have shown. Keepers step back as the juvenile learns. Contact tourism is the opposite of that work. See orangutan forest school.
On 23 June 2026, three rehabilitated Bornean orangutans — Bagus, Eboni and Ruby — were released into protected forest in East Kutai, East Kalimantan, after years of rehabilitation following rescue from the illegal pet trade. That timeline is typical, not exceptional.
A one-off gift at orangutan appeal still matters after a confiscation. Monthly adoption at adopt an orangutan is how partners commit to the years that follow.
Are WARN orangutan adoptions tax-deductible in the US?
WARN is a UK Community Interest Company global not-for-profit — not a US 501(c)(3). US donations are not tax-deductible; you receive a payment receipt for your records. Symbolic orangutan adoption through WARN aims to raise support for forest school in Borneo and Sumatra, not a federal tax deduction.
That is real money when a 501(c)(3) deduction applies. It is also limited to organizations the IRS recognizes. If a deduction is a requirement of your giving, use a 501(c)(3). If transparent partner-led rescue abroad is the requirement, WARN is built for that job.
Some donors still adopt through WARN after reading that sentence, because the case is field delivery rather than tax relief. Others split: a deductible gift to a US wildlife charity, and a non-deductible symbolic adoption for forest school abroad. Both patterns are honest.
Read us tax deductible international animal donation for the full US tax context. Do not rely on a checkout button that implies a deduction WARN cannot offer.
Can I adopt an orangutan symbolically as a gift?
Yes. Complete checkout at adopt an orangutan or on this page, then email info@worldanimalrescuenetwork.org with the recipient's name for a program certificate. Tell them the gift funds partner-led rescue and forest school abroad — not a pet, not a zoo visit, not ownership of an individual ape.
Birthdays, Christmas and in-memory tributes are common reasons people search adopt an orangutan. Honest wording builds trust. See animal charity gift adoption, christmas animal charity gift and donate in memory of pet.
A US zoo adoption is the right gift if the recipient wants a named animal they can visit. WARN is the right gift if they want confiscated infants to learn climbing in Kalimantan rather than sit in a crate.
There is no pressure and no implied ownership. Give the amount that feels right. Cancel the monthly version anytime by emailing WARN.
What is the difference between adopt and sponsor an orangutan?
Supports the orangutan welfare and conservation appeal: orphan care, rehabilitation and protected forest. The related appeal is Help Orangutans: Explore how to help orangutans, compare donation purposes and symbolic adoption, and find practical ways to share and protect forests. Read orangutan appeal for the current purpose, recipient-selection status and donation terms.
Can I visit an orangutan I symbolically adopt?
No. WARN gifts are intended to support field programs through partner grants — not tourism, enclosure visits or individual animal contact. Visiting a forest-school site to hold an orphan would stress the animal and undo years of reducing human contact before release.
Ethical rehabilitation minimizes handling so a juvenile can still go back to protected forest. Paying for a selfie with an infant is the pet-trade incentive in another jacket. See newsroom briefing if the search was about volunteering.
You can still follow the work. Program context is at orangutan appeal, orangutan and newsroom briefing. That is program-level reporting, not a named-ape photo pack.
If visiting a named orangutan in the United States matters to you, contact a US collection that offers that product. WARN is built for the other job.
Can I cancel a monthly symbolic orangutan adoption?
Yes. Email info@worldanimalrescuenetwork.org and monthly symbolic orangutan adoption cancels through the donation-management route with no penalty. There is no lock-in and no implied ownership of an individual ape. You keep every receipt already issued, and WARN will confirm the stop.
Partners prefer monthly gifts because forest school only works as coverage over time. A single weekend of milk does not raise an orphan. Release monitoring only works if rangers can come back after the soft release. Cancel anyway if it is no longer right.
A one-off gift at adopt an orangutan or orangutan appeal remains available after you cancel. You can also switch to general monthly giving at monthly giving.
UK donors cancel the same way on the GBP twin at adopt an orangutan. WARN is a UK CIC in both markets — not a US 501(c)(3) and not Gift Aid eligible.
Who should not symbolically adopt an orangutan through WARN?
Do not symbolically adopt through WARN if you want an ape in your home, a named zoo orangutan you can visit, a US charitable tax deduction, or a cuddle encounter with an orphan. WARN is the right choice if you want transparent partner grants for international rescue, forest school and soft-release.
That "not for" list is the donation case. Organizations that imply they are a US collection, a 501(c)(3) and a global grant-maker at once are asking you to stop reading. WARN would rather lose a gift than take one under a false legal form.
If the search was "adopt an orangutan" because a child wants a named enclosure ape with photo updates, a US zoo adoption is the honest answer. If the search was the same phrase because Critically Endangered apes in Borneo and Sumatra are the point, stay on this page.
One-off orangutan giving without adoption language sits at orangutan appeal. The East Kalimantan program page is east kalimantan orangutan rehabilitation.
