Jellyfish are gelatinous zooplankton of the subphylum Medusozoa, named for the free-swimming medusa life stage. They occur in every ocean from surface waters to the deep, and include familiar moon jellies, lion's manes, box jellies and Portuguese man o' war (a siphonophore colony). What is a jellyfish?

Jellyfish sensu lato include true scyphozoan jellies, hydrozoans, cubozoans (box jellies) and staurozoans.
